Atascocita First Responders Install over 400 New Smoke Alarms to Area Residents in October
Friday, November 1, 2019
Humble, TX. (Nov 1, 2019) – According to a study by the National Fire Protection Association, 3 out of every 5 home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no working smoke detectors. During the month of October, the first responders of the Atascocita Fire Department were omni-present throughout the community of Atascocita, in schools, in churches and especially in homes.
In a concerted effort to increase fire safety awareness in a lasting and meaningful way, the Harris County Emergency Services District #46/the Atascocita Fire Department, put out the word through social media and community interactions that any Atascocita home in need of a smoke detector could contact the department and schedule an appointment for the installation of free smoke detector(s) in their home. Often by the end of the same day as the request was made, a team of first responders would arrive at the resident’s home and install as many smoke detectors as needed in that home. The entire effort was absolutely free of charge to the homeowner. By the end of October, 410 smoke detectors had been installed in Atascocita homes.
Assistant Chief Sean Richardson commented that “The program not only ensures that families have working smoke alarms, but it also enhances our visibility and promotes trust within our community”. The Atascocita Fire Department’s ability to provide such a valuable service is made possible by the board of directors of HCESD #46 who are committed to providing cost effective emergency services to the Atascocita community and by organizations such as the Insurance Council Of Texas (ICT) who donated over 100 smoke detectors at the beginning of October. Area retailers also contributed to the effort by providing special pricing for the purchase of additional smoke detectors. ###
