Firefighter for a Day Creates Memories for A Lifetime

Kyler Campbell reported to Atascocita Fire Department Station 19 ready to experience a day in the life of a firefighter.

Humble, TX. (July 30, 2019) - When the Atascocita United Methodist Church recently sought a contribution for a silent auction charity event, the Atascocita Fire Department stepped up by donating an experience to remember, the lucky winner would get to experience a day in the life of a firefighter.

Sixteen-year-old Kyler Campbell arrived at Atascocita Fire Department’s Station 19 before the Sun rose over Lake Houston. Under the guidance of Battalion Chief Ron Fovargue and the team of first responders that make up the C-Shift, Kyler joined right in observing and even performing some of the less glamorous but essential duties of the day such as washing the fire trucks, inspecting equipment, and making a run to the grocery store for the food that would make up the day’s meals. It’s true what you hear, many first responders are actually pretty good cooks!

After breakfast had been cooked, eaten, and cleaned-up, C-shift, including Kyler, loaded up and headed over to Atascocita Station 39 where they would all participate in some very important training.  Performing CPR on a firefighter in full gear in the midst of fighting a fire is a possibility for which every first responder must be prepared and being prepared means training and practicing.  On this day, in a session led by EMT-P/firefighter, Ruth Chavez, Kyler was literally right in the middle of that training.  After suiting-up in full gear, Kyler played the role of downed firefighter in need of CPR.

The second half of the day was busy, and adrenaline filled. Riding along on emergency calls, even as an observer, Kyler got to experience that sense of urgency and importance that is instantly triggered by the voice of the emergency dispatcher announcing a fire alarm. Several times that afternoon, Kyler and the first responders of C-shift, responded to urgent calls throughout Atascocita.  By the end of the day, Kyler had definitely experienced a day in the life of a firefighter and undoubtedly accumulated enough memories to last a lifetime.

Chief of Department Mike Mulligan greatly values the Atascocita Fire Department’s daily involvement with the community and day’s like this are no exception.  In a message to the department members following this event, Mulligan commented, “My pride is overflowing. I knew that regardless of the crew on duty, our interaction with our customers would be the same and C-shirt proved the point. They did an amazing job and made our guest feel welcome and a part of the crew”.
