Hospital Evacuation Drill - AMBUS/C-130
Sunday, May 24, 2015

On April 9, 2014, the Atascocita Volunteer Fire Department participated in, “Operation Whirlwind”, a hospital evacuation drill to prepare for the upcoming 2014 hurricane season.  AVFD sent the AMBUS (MPV-601) and a crew of 6 to the drill.  The drill began by dispatching the AMBUS (MPV-601) to Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital for patient evacuation due to an approaching hurricane.  The AMBUS loaded 17 patients and transported them to nearby Ellington Airport.  There the AMBUS, along with several other Emergency Service agencies, rendezvoused with a C-130 from the National Guard.

The patients were unloaded and taken to a triage area and then loaded one by one onto the C-130.  The training took several hours to complete, but this type of training is vital when faced with a devastating hurricane, such as, Hurricanes Katrina and Ike.

In the days following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, 10,000 people were evacuated by C-130 from Armstrong Airport.  Before Hurricane Ike made land fall in 2008 UTMB Medical Center had to be evacuated.

This drill exposed and trained the AVFD AMBUS team to the challenges of hospital evacuation and loading patients into aircraft for emergent evacuation.
