Community Alert: Counterfeit CPR Cards Discovered
Thursday, August 25, 2016
Officials with the Atascocita Volunteer Fire Department (AVFD) have discovered the issuance of counterfeit Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) cards in the Atascocita area. The discovery was made while department officials were assisting a customer with a CPR question. The cards are similar in appearance to an American Heart Association (AHA) CPR card and AVFD officials have seen counterfeit versions of Healthcare Provider and Heart Saver CPR cards. The cards were issued by a private company or individual that is not associated with AVFD or AHA.
The AVFD is limited in the ability to investigate or control these types of problems. However, AVFD officials are assisting the individuals that were issued the counterfeit cards and cooperating with American Heart Association. The AVFD is offering free CPR classes to anyone who has received a counterfeit card.
The AVFD has been teaching American Heart Association CPR courses to the community since 2009 and has taught over 3000 people lifesaving CPR. The American Heart Association provides the official science, guidelines and curriculum for the various CPR classes. The AVFD has several AHA certified instructors who teach several classes each month. The goal for AVFD is to teach as many people in the community the skills of lifesaving CPR, AED, first aid and airway obstruction. The AVFD has invested a lot of time, research and money to have the best response plan and equipment for cardiac arrest and choking. However, the most important and effective action is early CPR and AED application by the person or person(s) who witness the event. Time matters and early intervention by the public or family members is critical to survival.
Photos of the counterfeit cards have been posted to show the subtle differences and aid in understanding if you or someone you know has received a counterfeit CPR card. If you have a counterfeit card or are in doubt please contact The Atascocita Volunteer Fire Department at 281-852-2181, website at www.AVFD.com or come by the Head Quarters building at 18425 Timber Forest Dr.
