Paramedic - Field Training Officer (FTO)

The Paramedic – Field Training Officer reports directly to the Division Chief of EMS and is in the first tier of management within organization.  This position will execute day-to-day operations of an MICU as an In-Charge Paramedic (PII).  The position will also be responsible for field training for all levels of EMS credentialing, (up to PII level) of organizational employees.  The ideal candidate can work in cohesively with other Field Training Officers in the successful training and development of EMS Field Staff.  This training can include students of contracted, accredited higher educational institutions and vocational style institutions as well.  

This position is expected to bring together in harmony the Training Division and employees seeking credentialing.  The Field Training Officer is expected to deliver a unified message from the administrative Command Staff and Training Division.  Also, it is expected that the ideal candidate will work closely with its Fire Division counterpart to further develop a unified department.  A heavy emphasis is placed on EMS credentialing. 

As this position will have day-to-day operational responsibility of a single MICU, a close working relationship with other leadership staff members is imperative.  Some responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • In-Charge Paramedic (PII)
  • Field Training
  • Attendance at 80% of required meetings
  • Involvement in special projects designated by the Division Chief of EMS
  • Assistance with mandatory continuing education delivery
  • SOG development/Implementation/Revision

The Paramedic – Field Training Officer is an entry level management position, within the organization.  The fundamental structure of their work schedule is a 9-day rotation (24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 4 days off).  However, the expectation is that the successful candidate will expend the time necessary to ensure the successful operation of the organization.  This may require additional requirements outside the normal shift schedule.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate for this position will meet the following minimum standards:

  • Two or four year degree in one of the following disciplines or an equivalent combination of experience and education: applied science – EMS, fire science, emergency management, Emergency Health Sciences
  • Three years of In-Charge Paramedic experience with a reputable, moderately busy 911 system (Five or more years preferred)
  • Two or more years as a Field Training Officer for an EMS agency (911 system preferred)
  • Possess National Registry and/or Texas DSHS certification as an EMT Paramedic or Licensed Paramedic
  • BLS CPR, ACLS, PALS, ITLS (or similar) (Instructor preferred)
  • Texas Department of State Health Services - EMS Instructor Certification (preferred)
  • NIMS 100, 200, 700 and 800 certification

Compensation Package

  • Salary Range: $59,904 - $65,128
  • TML Health, Dental and Vision, $1000 stipend provided towards coverage
  • TCDRS retirement, 6% employee contribution, 100% employer match
  • Personal Time Off (PTO) – accrued at department standard
